Need help figuring out how much storage space you’ll need for all your stuff?

Thanks to the handy Storage Unit Calculator created by (and courtesy of) Barking Tuna Web Design, you can compute the estimated cubic footage needed to store all of your household items.

First, you’ll need to enter the quantities for each item in your house, including:

  • Living areas
  • Kitchen
  • Dining areas
  • Bedrooms

Be sure to include other miscellaneous items from your garage and outdoor storage sheds.

Method of Calculation

The calculator assumes an average ceiling height of approximately nine feet and includes a built in 15% “padding” factor to account for varying ceiling heights, personal packing and storing techniques, and other anomalies.

Calculator Instructions

After entering all of the possessions you intend to store, simply click the “Calculate” button located at the bottom of the page.

The calculated amount (see image below) should reflect the most efficient storage unit size for your needs.

When you’re ready, click here to begin » (opens in new window).

In the above example, the items to be stored will occupy approximately 1,441 cu ft.

After factoring in the 15% “padding”, the estimated unit size is a 10′ by 20′ storage unit with approximately 1,800 cubic feet of storage space.
